The future of semiconductors in Europe does not depend only on chip manufacturing itself. Equally important are areas such as finalisation, integration, testing, and the security of supply chains. This is where one of Europe’s greatest weaknesses is becoming increasingly visible today — but also where an opportunity is opening up for countries that want to become part of the semiconductor ecosystem in a strategic and value-added way.
In an interview for Živé.sk, Slovak Chips Competence Centre Director Michal Mičjan and Technical Director Juraj Marek highlighted this issue. They stressed that Europe must think not only about chip production, but also about building a complete and functional value chain that includes research, design, advanced packaging, testing, and industrial deployment.
For Slovakia, this represents an important opportunity. In areas that are still underdeveloped in Europe today, our country can build on its technical know-how, industrial links, and strong connection between academia and industry.
The interview confirms that if Europe wants to strengthen its technological resilience, it must look at semiconductors in a broader and more comprehensive way. And Slovakia can be part of that effort.
