A chip war is currently unfolding between China and the United States in connection with Taiwan, where a large share of the world’s semiconductors is manufactured. Where does Europe stand in this strategic competition? And what needs to be done to make us, as Europeans, more self-confident in this field and to prevent a repeat of the situation seen during the coronavirus pandemic, when the global chip shortage paralysed the production of cars and electronics?

In the past, even Czechoslovakia was part of the Soviet space programme. What happened, and what are Slovaks focusing on today in the field of semiconductors and chip technologies?

These questions are answered in the interview by Michal Mičjan, Director of the Slovak Chips Competence Centre. The centre’s main goals include not only promoting and popularising semiconductors, but also supporting education, the development of startups, small and medium-sized technology companies in Slovakia, and helping to bring innovation into practice. This includes, for example, adapting study programmes at selected secondary technical schools so that graduates are better prepared for careers in the semiconductor industry, as well as creating conditions for the growth of innovative companies and strengthening the Slovak semiconductor ecosystem.
